for students and their parents Nexus Church will sponsor Our Whole Lives, a nationally renowned program on human sexuality for fifth and sixth grade students and their parents. Developed by the United Church of Christ and the Unitarian-Universalist Association, Our Whole Lives covers topics and skills that both parents and students want to have available but schools are less likely to cover. To introduce the program and answer questions, a one-hour parent’s only meeting will be held Sunday, Sept 11, at 11:30 am at the East Butler County YMCA. Parents must give written permission for their child to participate. Starting Sept 25, the five sessions for students will meet Sunday afternoons from approximately 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the East Butler County YMCA. The class is open to any parent and student, regardless of their affiliation with Nexus Church or their faith background. Tuition is $60.00 for Nexus members or $85.00 for non-members. Scholarships and a sliding scale fee are available. In the class for fifth and sixth graders, participants explore the physical and emotional changes of puberty. They also will examine topics such as values and sexuality, communication and decision making. The program helps parents and their children establish a lifelong family pattern of communication around sensitive topics. Each session includes Home Link -- a homework activity for parents and children to complete together. Teachers will be Helen Ulrich of Springboro, OH, and Mike Underhill of West Chester, OH. Ulrich is mother of three children and has many years’ experience in leading programs for girls. Underhill, pastor of Nexus Church, is father of one daughter. Before coming to Nexus, Underhill was the director of the LGBTQ Religions Studies Center at the Chicago Theological Seminary. For more information, please call Nexus Church at 513-708-7803. |
